My name is Raven! I am the creator of Super Hijinx, a slice-of-life, action-adventure-comedy audio series. What is the series about?A Black homeschool family with superpowers is happy to find a community of people like them. They soon realize that not all is sunny in Supervale with the dichotomy of Heroes versus Helpers, that some people are mysteriously losing their superpowers, and that they could be next. Can they rise up and fight back against this evil, and also live normal lives with their crazy superpowers? Why did I create this series? My sister and I were homeschooled. We entertained ourselves by role playing video game characters and original characters. From this, the Johnsons were born, a homeschool family with six children.I wrote short stories about the Johnsons and their hectic homeschool lives. I narrated the stories with unique voices for each of the characters. As the series developed, I gave the Johnsons superpowers. I wanted the overarching story to revolve not around saving the world from
villains, but on the day to day challenges of having superpowers to begin with.
This has always been my favorite part of superhero stories: watching the characters navigate an ordinary world with extraordinary abilities, attempting to act normal, and making hilarious mistakes along the way. When the pandemic hit, schools shut down around the world, forcing many parents to homeschool their children in lockdown. While
the height of the pandemic is over, the story remains fresh and relevant.
There are numerous stories out there featuring Black characters, which is something I felt was missing only a few years ago. What sets Super Hijinx apart is its focus on the homeschool experience, with superpowers as an added bonus.I want Super Hijinx to be the perfect distraction for busy families, something they can listen to while cleaning, cooking, crafting, or driving around on errands or field trips. I want it to break down common misconceptions and stereotypes about homeschoolers being religious, clannish, and sheltered. I want to show Black homeschoolers that they can be heroes, too.Audiobooks and audio dramas were an integral part of my homeschool experience. When it comes to storytelling, I find that there is nothing more immersive than pure imagination.Ready to listen?
